Writer's Block: Call Me

Jun. 2nd, 2009 | 09:02 pm

Do you still use a landline at home, or do you rely completely on your cell phone?
Definitely landline... I use it whenever my cell phone's out of power. Even more so now that I broke my cell phone - dropping it was an accident, but dropping it and then having it fall down the stairs, and then breaking in two on hitting the concrete, really makes me wonder if someone's out there having a cosmic joke at my expense.

On Holidays and Culture

I live in Canada, where we pride ourselves on being a 'cultural mosaic'. The street where I live, in the Toronto suburbs, is a great example. There's representation from every continent, and such is the diversity that if you're not celebrating a particular festival or observance, chances are pretty good someone else up or down the road is. It's a great way to connect to your neighbours, and provides a means of learning about other cultures in a more intimate way than just reading about it on Wikipedia.

That being said, there's only so many times I can hear 'Danny Boy' - this is courtesy of my Irish-Italian neighbours. Don't get me wrong, I like St. Paddy's Day, and my mother did name me 'Shannon'; but there's got to be a better song that's representative of the Irish culture and much-loved holiday other than one that A) was written by an Englishman, who B) never set foot on Irish soil, and C) whose tune, metre and lyrics are better suited for a funeral! (Case in point: the ninth episode of the first season of BBC's Torchwood, 'Random Shoes'. Yes, I like Doctor Who.) Even the sunniest person can't help but feel depressed after listening to it day in and out, and I can't help but wonder how the depression suffers on my street feel.

Just for the record, the neighbours in question live right next door to me. My bedroom faces their eldest girl's room, which in turn is right above their media room, which houses the stereo system that plays the song at full volume. No, earmuffs don't help (despite it being winter and our getting walloped by yet another load of snow). Neither do requests for turning down the sound (as it's eventually forgotten by the residents and cranked back up).

Never thought I'd wish March Break would be over already, and I'm not even in school. How's that for irony?

Been a long time...

Yeesh - just thought I'd see how long it's been since the last entry. I hadn't realized it'd been nearly a year!

Does that count as being inactive? I post comments on other LJs/communities... Maybe not?

In all honesty, I don't really like writing about my life (odd, since I like fanfiction and you'd think FF writers would be downright effusive when it came to any kind of writing). Not much to update folks who do stumble across this lonely bit of cyberspace. Slogged through classes, kept up average grades. Turned 21, stayed mostly sober, visited Vegas with my family and learned about 'going for broke' the hard way, and to top it all off, my sister wins an eleventh-hour mini-jackpot literally minutes before we left the Paris for McCarran and home.

Query: How come we don't have a Sanrio store in Canada? Or even better, one solely devoted to Hello and Charmmy Kitty. (Apologies to anyone who likes Twin Stars, Cinnamoroll, Keroppi, etc.) I can't find Charmmy anywhere - and eBay's only reliable up to a point.

Yay for memes!!

Because I was bored...

(Click here to post your own answers for this meme.)

I miss somebody right now. × I don't watch much TV these days. I own lots of books.  (Seriously. I've run out of shelf space, that's how bad it is)
I wear glasses or contact lenses.  (Is laser eye surgery worth it?) × I love to play video games. × I've tried marijuana.
I've watched porn movies.  (Who hasn't?) × I have been the psycho-ex in a past relationship. I believe honesty is usually the best policy.
I curse sometimes. I have changed a lot mentally over the last year.  (Or rather, at least I'm not bouncing off the walls anymore, which is good!) × I carry my knife/razor everywhere with me.
it goes on...Collapse )

Not much to say. I'm 20 years old, 100% Canadian, a uni student and just an average boring anime otaku and comic fan. I'm not one for posting -- if anything I'm usually the lurker who reads other people's stuff for a lark. I've been on FF.N for a good long while, can't remember how long, considering I have (or rather, had) multiple accounts at some point or another over the years. Used to write for various animes and books, and now I'm hooked on Disney's Incredibles and that cherished classic Alice in Wonderland.

I never thought I'd jump on the LJ bandwagon, honestly. I mean, my life's boring enough; who'd want to read about it? Guess when that odd exciting event comes up, I'll have an outlet to post it on. But until then, I'll go back to lurking about.
